Monumental staircase – Escolapias

Monumental Staircase of the Escolapias Alcalá de Henares The building is a baroque palace, built in 1725 by a Navarrese nobleman settled in Alcalá, at the time of his marriage. Reusing part of the previous 17th century building, he endowed it with new elements, such as an excellent façade with its own coat of arms, a remarkable vestibule, an interesting patio, and above all a monumental staricase of great proportions, a “façade staircase”, where in an enveloping set of lights, colors and forms, the essential elements of Baroque art are fused, together with the most advanced scientific proportions of the time, to which is added its exceptional acoustics, which allows it to be frequently converted into a Cultural Center, with numerous concerts and theatrical performances.

The building has had outstanding dwellers, the most famous of them, the French photographer Jean Laurent, between 1863 and 1882, who repainted and gilded the dome of the staircase adding his own symbolic repertoire, keeping almost everything pre-existing. And to clear the senses, the visit concludes in the rear courtyard, which also has its charm.
