Archiepiscopal Palace

It was the residence of the archbishops of Toledo in Alcalá de Henares. It is known of its construction from the thirteenth century, being carried out extensions, improvements and restorations until the nineteenth century. In its architecture there is a succession of styles such as Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque, being particularly noteworthy the intervention, in the 16th century, of Alonso de Covarrubias. Various Castilian monarchs resided here, synods and councils were held, and the youngest daughter of the Catholic Monarchs and future Queen of England, Catherine of Aragon, and the German Emperor Ferdinand, son of Joanna I “the Mad”, were born here. It is also famous as the place where the first interview between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus took place. Through the XIV Tower you can access the Antiquarium, which shows the remains of the Archiepiscopal Palace, the galleries of the Ave Maria, the great courtyard of Fonseca and the famous staircase of Covarrubias. It offers the possibility of climbing the medieval wall and visiting the interior of its towers.
