Ours is a city with a great cultural offer that enhances and complements its tourist attraction. The visitor can admire the heritage of the city just by walking through its streets, but there is always the opportunity to visit one of the exhibitions of Alcalá de Henares scheduled in its buildings, which in many cases are already heritage in themselves. A good example is the old Hospital de Santa María la Rica, a building from the 13th and 14th centuries, which is now the headquarters of the Department of Culture and one of the halls where the most important exhibitions of Alcalá de Henares are held. The same goes for the Casa de la Entrevista, named after the interview that took place between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus in 1486 in the nearby Archbishop’s Palace, or the Gilitos Socio-Cultural Center, which hosts all kinds of exhibitions, workshops and summer cinema. The old GAL factory, a jewel of industrial architecture in Spain, has recently hosted the Made in Spain Motorcycle Exhibition and, at Christmas, the Great Monumental Nativity Scene.

The Oidor Chapel is the seat of the Central Tourist Office and the church where Cervantes was baptized. It also has a room for temporary exhibitions.

Another place worth mentioning is the Margarita Xirgú Auditorium, whose program is of great cultural interest due to its exhibitions, charity events, local theater and book presentations. The Zulema Social and Cultural Center, the Paco de Lucía Auditorium, the Humor Factory and the Quevedo Humor Institute are other places to enjoy the city’s culture.
